Firefox

So, Firefox 2 is about to come out, thats good. However, that means versioning problems for extensions. TMP 0.3.5 isn’t quite ready yet. It will very soon though.

That means that in AMO, we have an older version that works up to 1.5. What I dont understand is that I write:

If you are using anything newer than Firefox 1.5.0.x, please take a look at http://tmp.garyr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2582

I expect people to at least read it. I mean if I took the time to put it there shouldn’t they try to at least take the time to read it? They obviously know how to read otherwise how would they know FF 2.0RC1 is out? That leaves me to the conclusion that a lot of people are ignorant and/or lazy. That left me to write a new message saying:

HELLO? PLEASE READ THESE COMMENTS!

A FIREFOX 2.0RC COMPATIBLE BUILD IS AVAILABLE

PLEASE GO HERE, http://tmp.garyr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2582

I shouldn’t have to do this, but what other choice do I have?

The next version of TMP wont be ready for some time as were adjusting it for firefox 2 and 3.

However, there have been some negative feedback from some of our users. I already posted about this, so I am not going to go more than that.

Instead of trying to figure out what is wrong ourself perhaps some of you can comment on how to make it feel better and unbloated.

What is it that makes people feel that is bloated? Is it the size, amount of options, the language, the menus, etc?

If you can post suggestions on how to make it feel better for a users post them here or on the forum. These can be removing options, improving language, using more pictures, and so forth.

Thanks for the work

TMP went from being in the third page of most popular to the first in the second page.

Now its in the first page of most popular aka TOP 10. Its great news. No time did I think we would get more than 50k downloads a week.

We now even beat TBP. Hopefully more will use it and it will remain there for quite some time. Were at number 7, can we get 6? Perhaps. Watch out IE TAB :P

I don’t know how I’ve been feeling lately, but I have gotten some negative feedback from some users. I have no problem with it, its just how some come about it. Anyways I have been having this on my mind and wanted to point it out.

A developer takes a great risk by developing an extension for tabs. Why you ask? We’ll because tabs are broad and users want more control of it. This is what I and onemen tried to do. However as we add more functionality that people requested, we get more that complain about it. Because of this, we turn stuff off and add options for it. Guess what? This isn’t good enough, as it is seen as bloat. Bloat is a very hurtful word to developer, well at least me.

I try to please as many people as I can. This is getting to a conflict. We have users that like simplicity and are very afraid of option. Most of these are the same that don’t take time to look over the whole extension or the documentation provided. Who else offers great(at least I think so) support and documentation. Anyways, they request features that have always been there. For example, at first people didn’t recognize that the close button was provided. I had it off by default but I now turned it on so that they could see that it is available. I don’t think I should do this should I?

The second type of people are the ones that like more customization. I try to please these as well because sometimes I might want the same feature. However, as time goes by, the features they want are getting overdone. Implementing them would increase the size and also cause some problems. Some of their problems are with a minor annoyance such as shortcut keys. I honestly don’t think I should implement ability to change because of another extension. Why can’t the other extension do it or why cant the user take the initiative to do it themselves?

As you can see I try to please 2 kinds of people. Can you see how they may conflict with each others from time to time. I am not sure what the future for the extension is but I just don’t understand the overall opinion of the extension. I guess that is a problem faced by everyone.

For everyone that doesn’t belong in any of the groups, I thank you. There are many that stay with the decisions I make. The extension wouldn’t be it without you.

Every user has different surfing habits and extensions should try to adapt to it. I just don’t see the position my extension.
